Thinking About Out Of State Public Colleges?

When it comes to choosing colleges, if you’re looking at Out-Of-State Public Colleges, you need to keep some things in mind and tread with care. Here’s why:
When you are a non-resident student at these colleges, you are at a distinct disadvantage.Scholarships, grants and financial aid at these colleges are “hoarded” for in-state students. The premium charged to you, the out-of-state student is designed to help the in-state students.
What this means for you is that you MUST be prepared for unexpected and erratic tuition increases during your college years if you choose to attend an out-of-state public university.
Don’t want to take my word for it? New York passed a 14% mid-year increase at it’s public colleges and universities, and, according to Nick Johnson of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington noted that, “In previous recessions, state-supported institutions have raised tuition between 8 and 10 percent annually for several years running.”
There are two main take-aways:
1. Depending on your situation, a PUBLIC university may not be your most cost-effective option. Particularly if you’re what I call an “All Need” or a “Some Need” Family, the local state college will not likely be able to offer you all the financial aid you may need. Every year I work with clients who, when the financial aid offers come in, would have to pay MORE at the public college or university than they would at the private colleges.
2. If you are an Out-of-State resident, expect it to be even worse than you think. The public universities will be looking to minimize the impact to the students from their state (the ones who pay the state taxes that fund the majority of the college/university budget). So, how do they do it? Charge the Out-of-State Students more, of course!

Now, I know you’re wondering what you can do about all of this. Many of you might just feel powerless about it. After all, you want a college education for your child, the schools are going to charge what they’re going to charge and there’s not much you can do.
Let me tell you something: You don’t have to spend your life savings, go deep into debt or broke to get your children the college education that can help secure their futures! BUT, you do have to take action.
There are many strategies available to families that can help them get MORE MONEY to help pay the college bill. The more strategies you incorporate into your plan, the better your results will be.
Does this really work?
You betcha. But, if you don’t take action NOW, you won’t be able to do anything about the bill later. You cannot wait until it’s time to apply to financial aid to start planning how to pay for college. The time to start planning is NOW. It’s easy to SAY that you’ll do it. It’s quite another to actually DO it.
Your Smart Plan For College Assignment:
If you (or your student) are considering out-of-state public universities, you need a good answer for the following question: What is it that the out-of-state college offers that cannot be found at an in-state college where you wouldn’t pay the inflated “out-of-state” tuition?
If you cannot provide a satisfactory answer to that question, you need to think long and hard about the cost implications for your family if you insist on attending an out-of-state college or university.
If you and your family decide that an out-of-state college or university is the right place, you need to outline a best-case result, a likely case result and a worst case result so that you can plan properly.
If you and your student need help fine-tuning your list of colleges, and your applications to them, it’s time to take action and invest in some help.
