Home Schooling : Simple Experiments at Home

Home-school lessons are more enjoyable and memorable when they include a hands-on activity. It is one thing to study biology, it is another to discover it. Use these simple biology experiments to help your child understand her lessons. The experiments use everyday items that you already have in your home. Teach your young biology student about fungi using everyday household yeast. Because yeast down not contains chlorophyll, yeast cannot produce its own food. Demonstrate how yeast can find food through the process of decomposing with this simple experiment.

You will need to gather two plastic bags, a banana, dry yeast and a teaspoon. Cut two similar slices from the banana and place one piece of banana in each plastic bag. Measure one-half teaspoon of yeast and sprinkle the yeast on one banana slice. Mark the bag with the yeast and seal both bags. Let them set for one week. Check the bags to see which one show the greatest amount of decomposition.

Another demonstration of the need for yeast to feed on other substances can be seen in this fun experiment. This time you will need your dry yeast, sugar, a small glass jar with a narrow neck, a balloon, a measuring spoon and a measuring cup. You will also need two cups of warm water. Dissolve the yeast and the sugar in one cup of the warm water. Pour the mixture into the glass bottle. Add the other cup of warm water. Make sure the balloon has no air in it and place the mouth of the balloon over the lip of the bottle. Place the bottle in a dark, warm location and leave it for a few days. Check it daily and look for any changes in the balloon. As the yeast changes the sugar into energy, an carbon dioxide gas bubbles are formed and should cause the balloon to expand.

Plant biology is ripe for experiments. The effects of the sun on plants can be demonstrated in different experiments. Try these with your plant biologist. You will need a house plant, dark construction paper and tape. Cover one leaf of a house plant with dark construction paper. Tape the paper on all four sides to make sure the leaf doesn’t get exposure to the sun. Allow the rest of the plant to receive ample sunlight. After a week, remove the paper and check the leaf for effects. Without the presence of the sun, the leaf is unable to make chlorophyll. Without the chlorophyll, the leaf will die.

For the next experiment, you will need a cardboard box, scissors, and a house plant. Cut different holes in the box. Leave spots where no sunshine can enter. Place the house plant in the box and set it near the window. When the leaves start growing toward the opening and the sunshine, change the position of the plant and watch what happens. Plants are drawn to the sun. This example is an excellent example of phototropism.

Huge Increase In Home Schooling

Fourteen year-old Zoe Bentley ‘unschooler’, enrolled for several college classes, including algebra, astrobiology, chemistry and geology. “Maybe, I’ll earn a degree,” says Zoe.

Zoe has been homeschooled by her parents, thus earning the title ‘unschooler’. It is now believed that approximately between 1.5 to 2 million kids are home schooled in America alone, but the data for this statistic is difficult to obtain.

There is no set course schedule, curriculum, exams, or any attempt to ape traditional classrooms, unless the students ask for it.

At twelve years old, Zoe demanded geology lessons. When she applied for a class at Pima Community College she had to take a placement test. She said “It was surprisingly easy”.

While home schooling has been available for many decades, supporters say that there have been increases in the number of parents and children who are choosing to be ‘unschooled’.

John Holt, who was private schooled, named progressive schools soft jails and public schools hard jails. He was a fifth grade teacher widely known as the father of the ‘unschooled’. When he died in 1985 he left behind a wealth of books, including his 1964 work, ‘How Children Fail’. He claimed that mainstream schools hinder the learning process by making children study subjects they have no interest in, alongside fostering fear.

The experts agree that homeschooling is not the solution for everyone. It depends on the needs of each individual student and the amount of time a parent has available.

“Unschooling means looking at life as a creative adventure, a cooperative lifestyle that involves the entire family” says Sara McGrath, owner of an unschooling blog site.

Associate professor of education and applied linguistics, Kellie Rolstad, says “School was really wasting our time.” She unschools her 11, 13 and 14 year olds. “The kids had so many things they wanted to do and places they wanted to go and things they wanted to talk about, but all we could do was mindless homework. It was very frustrating.”

Rolstad’s oldest boy builds computers with his friends. He also plays bass, guitar, piano, violin and ukulele. He firmly believes had he stayed in school, his goal of chasing music as a career wouldn’t feel quite so real. “With unschooling you can do things how you want to.”

Countries that are the most prominent in homeschooling, include America, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. Germany has totally banned homeschooling, while in some other countries homeschooling is not socially tolerated. Home schooling is all about personal choices, particularly now with the vast amount of material available online.

How To Achieve a Home School Diploma by Distant Leaning?

Earning a home school diploma means you have completed your primary and secondary education at home, in contrast to the traditional classroom settings. There are many reasons why parents prefer to have their children educated at home.

It could be that the child has physical disability that would make the travel to school and home an unnecessary inconvenience. Maybe your child has advanced level of learning skills that you think it would be best if he or she is given special attention and the right lessons.

Or, it could also be that your house is situated far and the closest school is a travel by 3 hours or more, and you think it is practical to have the home schooling. The reasons for choosing home education seem to go on forever. This is not surprising especially that the safety of the school environment has been questioned lately.

The classrooms are regarded to be the second home of children and students, and thus, schools are expected to provide safe venue as they learn. However, in recent years, the school campuses have been a favorite target of the criminals, insane, and psychologically disturbed individuals who find gratification from slaying students, teachers and anyone who comes their way. At times, the perpetrators themselves are current or former students or professors of the school.

If such is the case, how can you have a peace of mind knowing that at any time, someone from the school campus will have his mind distorted, and you have your son or daughter eagerly learning there? Even if the campuses are fool-proof and criminal-proof, the environment may become a breeding ground for violence.

Some students are natural born violent that they fear nobody in school. Not even their teachers. They bully around anybody or tease until they provoke anger. Soon fists are seen flying. Another reason why parents find it more beneficial to have home school diploma is the specific needs of their children as not all children have similar skills in learning. Some are advanced, while others need more attention. Still a few students have strengths in some subjects, and are weak in other areas. What better approach to use to address such varying needs than what home schooling does?

With home education, you can choose the lessons that your child will learn. For example, if he is good at Mathematics, you can feed him lessons that will not take so much of his time. And if he is weak in History, then you can allot longer periods for that subject, and you may adjust the type of lessons he will have. This way, you can guarantee that you child will have a balanced learning.

The bonding between a child and the parents will become strengthened as parents can be around their children if they have their web-based classes. Hence, you can guarantee that your child will get the attention and lessons he deserves without intimidation from other students.

Home school diploma has been given credits by the government body responsible for providing and regulating the education in the United States. Celebrities and even ordinary parents can avail of the benefits of home education.

This is also a way parents source textbooks for their children. In the long run however, you will need to purchase some supplies new and this is something that you will have to budget for.

Every set of parents that home schools their child has a set of supplies that budget-permitting they would like to invest in. These supplies would help give their children a more rounded experience at studies. One of these supplies is the microscope. This is one apparatus that can be used across the age groups. You will have to decide on buying this based on the amount of interest your child exhibits in science as well the amount it will be used.

Another investment would be a computer. Every parent would love to have this in their home right from the pre-school stage as this can lend a very dynamic aspect to their entire process of home schooling. Projects can be done, the way they are done in schools, presentations can be made and your child will also learn to use the internet under adult supervision in the right manner.

Many parents would also like to invest in educational videos as well as software. This will help make study sessions more interactive. This is a huge investment especially if it is for one academic year or for one student. The way to make it easier on your pocket is to consider renting the equipment or sharing expenses with a neighbor who may be home schooling as well.
